Math & Coding Activites
Abacus If you have an abacus, slide a bead over to count it. You can use the beads to count by ones, but you can also use an abacus to keep track of very large numbers. Generally an abacus will have 10 beads on a line. You can use the top row for ones, the second row down for tens, the third row down for hundreds, etc.
Coding Prep Teach the very very basics of coding combined with physical activity. Using paper "steps," set up a path. Teach them how to form "commands" to follow the path or maze. (Forward 4, turn right, forward 2, etc etc).
One to One Counting - take an egg carton and count to twelve, placing one small item in each section. Make it a game. Then try with two in each... Learning to count by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s is great practice. You can also count down from twelve, or use the egg cartons to start understanding patterns. If you start to put a bean in in a diagonal pattern... can you guess where the next one goes? What if you alternate a black bean with a white bean... what comes next? This all can be a game that helps to develop cognitive reasoning.
Place Value Styrofoam Cups Use them to strengthen number sense of place value. Simple instructions here: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Place-Value-Styrofoam-Cups-Directions-292482
Pool Noodle Fractions Take a few pool noodles in different colors, measure out a full length (like a foot). Take other colors, cut them into halves, fourths, thirds, sixths. Teach them different ways to make a whole. Simple instructions here: https://afewshortcuts.com/diy-pool-noodle-fraction.../
Subitizing and Number Sense! Subitizing is the ability to rapidly recognize numbers in a small set. You can download free dot/dice cards, or number cards. A friend of mine used to use one that looked like a bingo sheet, her kids would roll one or two dice, count the dots, and mark off a square in the bingo cards. It helped to really solidify their rapid number sense.
